As a general guide, we have multi-disciplinary research activity under three broad headings:

Mining Engineering - research areas include geomechanics of deep mining, rock support and ground control systems, mine evaluation, mine planning and decision analysis, production simulation, flexible mining systems, fragmentation technology, drilling technology, rapid drift development, underground safety and ergonomics, ventilation and fire analysis.

Process Engineering - research areas include nanotechnology, mineral processing, biochemical engineering, sustainable development, energy recovery and greenhouse gas reduction, polymerization, process modeling and simulation, process optimization and control, waste material recovery and reuse, biofuels, bioremediation and bioleaching. 

Robotics, Automation and Advanced Methods - research areas include telerobotic control of equipment, automation of production processes, advanced drilling and cutting technology, water jet technology, and equipment reliability assessment

Admission Requirements for Ph.D. Program

For the admission to the Ph.D. program, a candidate normally holds a master's degree with a B standing (or 70% average) in Mining, Mineral Processing, Metallurgical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical or other appropriate branches of engineering.
Candidates who hold a M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Geology, Physics or another appropriate discipline are considered for admission to the Ph.D. program. However, before being admitted to this program, such candidates may be required to successfully complete some qualifying courses drawn from the undergraduate engineernig curriculum.
